The school in Leavening also serves many other nearby villages. The start of school is busy time for Back Lane with the arrival of coaches, minibuses, taxis and cars all bringing in children. the school is an important part of village life. Apart from its educational function it also serves as a surrogate village hall. Many groups use the school in the evenings and it also plays host to annual events such as the Leavening Show.
Leavening Community Primary School is a Group 1 Local Education Authority School administered by North Yorkshire County Council whose central offices are at Northallerton. The School, established in 1906 and extended in 1964 and 2003, takes in children of all abilities from 5 - 11 years of age. The catchment area includes the villages of Acklam, Leppington, Scrayingham, Howsham, Thixendale as well as Leavening. There is a nursery operating for five mornings per week offering 17 places for 3 and 4 year old children. The children enter school the term after their third birthday, depending upon availability of places at that time as the nursery serves a very wide area. The children move from nursery into full time school twice a year, in September and January.
The School is divided now into three classes of children attending school full-time, and the nursery class which is in session for 5 mornings per week. The internal organisation can vary from year to year due to such factors as the number of children on roll and the teacher allocation, which is dependent on the number of children. The composition of the classes varies from year to year and this also influences the organisation. Therefore the teaching staff and governing body are continuously reviewing the situation and making changes or adaptations which are necessary to promote the efficient running of the school coupled with the best possible educational provision for each child. In 2010/2011 the children are divided into classes as follows:-

Nursery, Kittens:

5 mornings per week with children of 3 and 4 years of age. These children are taught by Mrs. Dawson

Lions:

Consists of children in the early years of Key Stage 1 of school, Reception and Year 2. They are taught by Mrs. Walker

Leopards:

This class is taught by Mrs Mellor and is made up of children in Year 3 & 4

Tigers:

These are the older children who are in Years 5 and 6. Mrs. Tillson teaches this class of children.

The National Curriculum is taught within this organisational framework and provision is made for the different year groups. The yearly plans are subdivided into half term detailed schemes of work and these are available in school for any parents wishing to see them.

The Jungle Cub’s after school club has been running for a number of years. The club runs on an afternoon until 5.30pm. It is operated by:
