This discovery that Leavening had an Police House is thanks to the information sent by Jane Bailey who had visited the site and offered up the information and photographs about her relative who was the village police man.
Information given by Jane
“My Great Aunt and Uncle - Gertrude and Joey Midgley lived in Leavening many years ago. Joey was the local policeman and they lived in the Police house at the bottom of the hill to Acklam bedside the spring.”
When Joey Midgley died in 1952 in Bridlington (where they had lived for some time) a press report list of the mourners included: –
Mrs M Turpi and family - Leavening, Mr and Mrs A Milburn - Leavening,
The Photographs
Some are taken in 1998 when I visited and some are from the days when Joseph Banham Midgley and his wife Eleanor Gertrude lived there.
The family group is taken c.1927 when my Mum and her middle brother stayed there whilst their mother was expecting their younger brother. The other couple are another aunt and uncle visiting.
In some the old police house badge can be clearly seen above the door and the house can be easily identified as the same one in the modern photos.
The change in uniform for Joey is interesting but unfortunately I have not dated these yet. The couple married in 1918 so the pictures are after that date.
After Leavening they moved to the Police House at West Lutton.
