Church Finally Gains Building Sharing Agreement

At last the church and chapel in Leavening have the Building Sharing Agreement finalised. which means that both parties will legally share the church building for services and social uses. This does mean that now the Methodists can finally release the cash they made on the sale of the chapel and the refurbishment & re-modelling of the church can now go ahead. Furthermore they have agreed to put extra cash into the fund than they have originally agreed. The VCC has secured more grants towards this project and the total is now looking achievable. There is much work to do, especially important is locating a suitable builder who has the necessary expertise and experience for the job.

The signing of the Agreement and to celebrate this agreement there was a special service held in the Sunday 13 April.

Big boost for village games area scheme

A FUNDRAISING campaign which is aiming to bring an all-weather games area to a Ryedale village has been given a "tremendous" boost.

Leavening Community Sport, whose members want to build the multi-use sports court in the primary school’s playing field, is £14,800 richer – thanks to a grant from Ryedale District Council.

The money will go towards the £73,000 cost of the court which, it is hoped, will be open by August.

Joe Crocker, LCS treasurer, said: “This is tremendous news. The council’s help is a significant and valuable contribution. This, along with several other applications for help lodged with regional and national bodies and own ongoing fundraising activities, should ensure we reach our target.”

In a recent survey, the project received overwhelming support from residents in Leavening and the surrounding villages, who will also be able to make use of the facilities, with tennis and football being the most popular choices of games people would like to play.

Many also revealed they would be interested in forming teams to compete in leagues, avoiding a six-mile trek to Malton to take advantage of similar facilities.

Wonders of Leavening

A HAT-TRICK of sporting successes is being celebrated at a Ryedale village school.

Leavening Community Primary School, near Malton, won the inaugural High Five netball tournament at Malton School, a mixed tag rugby competition at Malton & Norton RUFC and the Malton and Norton multi-skills festival for Year 1 and Year 2 pupils at Norton College.

Pupils from the school also finished second overall in a cross country event at Ampleforth College.

Head teacher Melanie Mellor said: "We are only a small school but the children are keen and willing. They have worked hard at their games and have now been rewarded with these successes.

"Their efforts have given a terrific lift to the whole school."
