The Jolly Farmers has been a pub for a long time. Previously it was The Board Inn, one of the several pubs in the village at the time. Before that it was a blacksmiths workshop.
The Jolly’s has featured prominently in the Yorkshire Evening Press pub of the Year awards.and has just won a coveted CAMRA award. To quote their article, “James Pryor promoted the Jolly Farmers in the village of Leavening (about 15 miles north-east of York) as our Autumn Country Pub of the Season and has provided the following information. It’s a friendly, cosy free house with a tiled drinking area, small restaurant, beer garden and family/games room; the pub opens every day, not always the case out in the country. The current owners, Richard and Sarah Smith, have been here since August 2004. On the bar, there are three permanent and two rotating guest ales. The regulars are John Smith’s Cask, Tetley Bitter and Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, while on my last visit there were seasonal guest beers from Rudgate of Tockwith and Nelson Brewery of Chatham, Kent. The ale is reasonably priced, with none costing more than £2.20. Put simply, it is one of the best country pubs in our area. Join us on the presentation social to find out if James is right!”
As is traditional for a village pub, it is the social heart of the village. It is host to several events through the year. The Jolly’s also boasts several pub quiz teams in the local league and is quite successful.
