Historical Resources
Title Banner

Although this website is not one designed for the aid of historical research or more specifically that of genealogy, the number of queries that I am receiving has given me cause to consider this area of interest. I am not an historian and much of the work in this section of the site is the work of another. But I have provided links to resources which others may find useful.

At the bottom of the the page I have provided an opportunity for you to offer suggestions of further resources which could be added to this page.

GENUKI: Section on Acklam & Leavening. The two villages are one parish, so often are listed together

GENUKI: Section on Leavening alone.

Familia is a web-based directory of family history resources held in public libraries in the UK and Ireland. Familia is the on-line starting-place to find information about materials in public libraries which will help you trace your family history.

This site, provided by the FamilyRecords.gov.uk consortium, aims to help you find the government records and other sources you need for your family history research.

The East Riding of Yorkshire Archives Service exists to collect, preserve and make available to the public the historic records of the East Riding.

Parish registers and wills are held at the Borthwick Institute of Historical Research, , but the City Archives does hold City Freemen’s Rolls back to the 13th century and the York Cemetery Company records from 1837-1961. Also poor and rate books from the 17th - 20th centuries.

The North Yorkshire County Record Office is used to obtain information for many personal, legal, administrative and historical purposes, such as: tracing ancestors, family history and genealogy.

For material for family historians which can be consulted at the Institute, see our family history pages and Summary of Holdings. Most of this is available on microfilm, and it is very important to make an appointment before any visit
